Five years after this government promised to introduce myki, it doesn’t work, it has cost nearly three times as much, and it remains a reminder that John Brumby can promise heaps and deliver little when it comes to projects of this size and this nature.

  • Victoria's transport chaos reflects the long term structural problems created by Labor's mismanagement.
Labor has given Victorians a third-world transport system and ten years of empty and broken promises. The new myki ticketing system will cost a huge $1.35 billion, but it’s not working properly and it’s years late.

John Brumby and the Minister for Transport always blame others for Labor’s transport failures, instead of taking responsibility and fixing the problems in our public transport system.

Labor has failed to plan or invest in Victoria's infrastructure and the consequences of its inaction are becoming painfully apparent, with Victorians suffering every day because of Labor’s incompetence.

Labor cannot deliver on its basic responsibility to provide public transport to enable people get to work on time and get home to their families.

After ten years and more than $300 billion in revenue, they still can't get it right.

With cancelled, late, crowded and dirty trains and trams, congested roads and the high level of violent crime on our transport system, it’s clear that the time for more undelivered empty promises is over.

John Brumby's self-congratulatory mantra is that under his government, Victoria is a great place to live, work and raise a family.

    Not yesterday it wasn't.

Yesterday was an embarrassment for Victoria's capital, which markets itself as one of the world's most liveable cities.

MYKI'S first day of full operation in Melbourne has been marred by a series of minor problems, with users complaining of overcharging, continuing issues with the $1.35 billion smartcard's website, and equipment failures.

… Myki has cost $472 million so far to create, making it one of the most expensive ticketing systems built to date. London's Oyster card cost £161 million ($A277 million) to create in 1998, and in total has since cost £1.16 billion, according to British treasury figures released in February. Myki will cost $1.35 billion to build and operate between July 2005 and July 2017.

  • Grumbles roll on as myki rolls out

COMMUTERS have shunned myki on its weekday today, with only a handful trying the system on buses and trams.

Complaints about broken myki machines, hard-to-understand pricing structures, the $10 price of a myki card and delays in the touch-on, touch-off system were the most common responses from disgruntled commuters.

… Opposition transport spokesman Terry Mulder said if too many people started using the myki system, it would collapse.

"This system is just too hard to use," he said.
